City should carefully consider tax proposal

The city of Farmington is once again considering a .25 percent increase in the gross receipts tax. Even if it is put up for a vote by the people, it is still an increase.

I believe an increase should only come after the city has proven it has done everything it can to save money.

As a citizen, I do not believe it is my responsibility to furnish employees the high number of take-home vehicles, especially since we are experiencing such high fuel prices. City leaders must do everything to contain costs before asking for a tax increase

I hold that our city leaders are not fulfilling their state constitutional duties. Article II, Section 2 of The New Mexico Constitution Bill of Rights states:

"All political power is vested in and derived from the people, all government of right originates with the people, is founded upon their will and is solely for their good."

So city leaders, your responsibility is to "the people." Those of you who are secretive and want to do things behind closed doors need to evaluate what your positions really entail. Those of you who are open and truly responsible to the people, kudos to you, and continue to represent  "the people"
